Local Attractions

The past few weekends we've been taking the bikes out to various nearby tourist-y things. Last weekend we rode out to Anglesey Abbey, which is a National Trust property with a house, gardens, and working water mill. We didn't go into the house, just wandered around the gardens and checked out the mill. Here it is from the outside:

You can't really see the waterwheel well because it's under the building, but you can walk around the inside and see the stone grinding wheel and various belts and gears and chutes.

It wasn't actually running while we were there, because they only do that about twice a month or so, but the were selling traditional mill-ground flour. They use wheat from their other property at Wimpole farm (where I took all those pictures of piggies).

I then converted the flour into traditional, home-made bread.

Mmmmm, bread.

This past weekend, we rode out to a Nature/Bird reserve. The website said it was about an 11km trip from Cambridge, so we figured that wasn't too bad. 11km wouldn't have been too bad. However, since it was actually about 20km, by the end of the 40km round trip I was just about collapsing. The biking itself was ok, it was the fact that I brought my camera and spare lens, and some other stuff in a backpack that's not designed for carrying cameras, and therefore my back and shoulders and neck were aching. SLR photography is fun, but the cameras sure do weigh more than point-and-shoots. We checked out google maps after we came back and discovered that even in a completely straight line, the distance was more than 11km, so whoever put that number on the website was clearly quite delusional. Anyway, pictures will be forthcoming. And next time, we'll check google maps first.
